Evening Classes - check your level

BEGINNERS

You have no previous knowledge of the language and want to make a start. The course is designed for you to have plenty of practice in class and learn the language under the supervision of a friendly native speaker. By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Greet other people, say and spell you name, and give basic information about yourself (i.e. nationality, profession, age, address and telephone number) and find out about other people.
  • Talk about the family and relatives.
  • Order something to eat or drink in a café and ask for the amount to pay.
  • Find out what things are called. How to find out what it is asking someone else.
  • Describe your house and talk about different rooms.
  • Look for things. How to ask someone what they are looking for and tell them where things are.
  • Ask where places are, identify and describe places (Directions I).

ELEMENTARY

You've studied the language some time ago or you’ve recently attended a beginner’s course and want to take a step forward. There will be plenty of activities for you to practise in class and improve your listening, speaking and reading skills and revise. By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Find your way around (Directions II).
  • Talk about the weather.
  • Shop for food using weights and measures.
  • Ask and give the time and enquire about opening and closing times. Arranging things. Days of the week, the months and the seasons.
  • Describe things and people using colours and physical characteristics.
  • Book a hotel room.
  • Enquire about public transport and timetables.
  • Describe your daily routine. Your hobbies.
  • Go to the restaurant, order from the menu and ask for the bill. What you like to eat and table talk.

PRE-INTERMEDIATE

You already have a basic knowledge and want to become more fluent in conversations in real situations and to be able to extract relevant information from a written text. By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Say what you like and dislike, give personal details, opinions: what you think of your town and describing what you do in your free time.
  • Accept and refuse invitations, give reasons; explain problems and give advice. Future plans: explain what you are going to do. Arrange to go to the cinema, ask about times and buy tickets.
  • Buy train tickets, enquire about departure / arrival times. Comparison: comparing trains and other forms of transport. Understanding station announcements. Other forms of transport: bus, car, metro, taxi, etc   Describe domestic routines in the future. Organize a meeting. Different types of holidays. Decide on a holiday destination together.
  • Talk about the weather; describe the seasons, the forecast. Telephone language: answer the phone and respond to phone request. Describe how you feel. Talk about different means of communication. Describe and explain what you are doing and what you do.
  • Say what you did yesterday and recently. Talk about holidays in the past. Biographies: describing your life and other people’s lives.
  • Parts of the body; say what hurts, describing symptoms. Ask and say what has happened and what you have done today; what someone has done today / this week / this month. Report lost property, say when you lost something and describe it (material, size and colour).

INTERMEDIATE

You are already familiar with most basic language structures and want to move towards a more advanced level, expand your vocabulary including idiomatic usage of the language. By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Give personal information. Introductions, hobbies, talk about the past. Describing situations in the past; describing and comparing people and talking about their character.
  • Talk about professions: Obligations, ads, CVs, job applications and interviews.
  • Talk about your future plans. Intentions and travel plans, travel agency. On holidays. The house and furniture. Descriptions. Ask for something and express ownership.
  • Tell what is allowed and what forbidden. Renting and getting your car repaired. Excuses and apologies.
  • Talk about your live now and then. Changes and memories. The ordinary life. In the countryside.
  • Describe places and characters, in the present and in the past. Mood changes.

UPPER INTERMEDIATE

You already have an advanced level and you want to improve and expand your language towards proficiency level. By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe objects. Ask, complain, change items and get refunds in shops, restaurants and hotels.
  • Write stories, tales and descriptions. News on the media. How to report an incident at the police station.
  • Talk about the media, opinions and invitations.
  • Give instructions, orders and advices. Prepare parties. Adverts.
  • Give recommendations and advices. Talk about hassles, wishes, doubts in the future.
  • Make polite requests using the present conditionals.
  • Express surprise; talk about intentions and future dreams.
